American Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin has named Tiger Woods, Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink and Rickie Fowler as his wildcard picks for next month's match at Celtic Manor.

The four captain's picks join Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jeff Overton and Matt Kuchar in the team that will bid to retain the cup from October 1-3.

Woods, who missed the 2008 match in Louisville following knee surgery, returns for his sixth cap, but has only once been on a winning side - in Boston in 1999.

He finished fourth at The Masters in his first event back from four months out and repeated that at the US Open, but has not had a top-10 finish since.

When Woods came 78th out of 80 at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational a month ago he expressed doubts about whether he would be of any use to the side playing the way he was.

But since starting to work with coach Sean Foley at last month's USPGA there has been a marked improvement and on Monday he finished 11th at The Barclays FedEx Cup play-off event.

In 25 Ryder Cup games - no captain has left him out of a single session yet - he was won 10, halved two and lost 13.

Stricker is expected to become his 12th partner. They had four wins out of four together in the Presidents Cup and were only once taken to the final green.

Johnson returns

Johnson, Masters champion in 2007, finished third in the USPGA last month and returns to the side after making his debut at The K Club in Ireland four years ago.

Cink receives a pick for the third time in four matches, but has not won a tournament since beating Tom Watson in a play-off for the Open Championship last summer and has had only one top-10 finish in the last six months.

Fowler, at 21 the same age as European rookie Rory McIlroy, will be the first man to play in the Walker Cup and the Ryder Cup in successive years.

He has not lifted a US Tour title, but has had three second places and is already ranked 33rd in the world.

I totally agree with the worries over Westwood''s fitness and cant help but think the rest of the team are worried. Harrington could be the biggest mistake of recent Ryder cup''s though....a complete shoker. Casey and Rose play week in, week out with the Americans and regularly beat them, unlike Harrington is hacking his way round every course he plays at present. Just glad Kim will not be there but very worried over Westwood and Harrington. Will Monty be strong enough to only play them in the singles??

Paul Casey''s rightfull place, how did you come too that conclusion, he chose not play his way into the team instead chased the bucks, But instead, just like the last ryder cup, expected to be picked ahead of guys who tried to make the team by right Harrington may not be in the best of form, but he''s a 3 time major winner

Kevin Stavers says...

A 90% fit westwood will secure 75% of the points that he plays for, he is the leader within this team. as for Anthony Kim he is a liability and this could be pavins master stroke by bringing Fowler onto the team. Could have the same impact that Garcia did when he first joined the european team before he grew up and fell out of love with the game.

Imagine any major tournament without Tiger Woods, it does not inject the same enthusiasm. How good are the rest of the golfing world compared to Tiger he is still number one despite going into self exile last year and despite having his worst playing year in his career. Every week we read that his no. one spot is in jeopardy but nobody has ha spassed him yet. Amazing isnt it., yet i read an article that Tiger is lucky to be chosen. Who will not want to have the worlds number 1 player in their team, perhaps maybe Colin Montgomerie.

I think Monty has mad a great selection, i cant see why Anthony Kim has been left out thats a massive plus for Euorpe, come on Europe.

Peter Gilzean says...

My hope is that unless he is 100% sure of his fitness, Westy will do the honourable thing and withdraw. This will then allow Monty to get Casey his rightful place in the team. Will be a very close one...no more than 2 points in a win for Europe!

Great to see Tiger in the team but I cannot believe he has left out Antony Kim after his performance in the last Ryder cup and he would have played his way onto the team if he was not injured. Good for us he is missing much prefer to face Cink or Johnson as opponents in match play than Kim!!!

Brian Bull says...

What I think is funny is that there has never been a weak spot in Tigers armour , and what with sledging in cricket now the Europeans have one .... Imagine Tiger eyeing a six footer at the sixteenth to save his match from losing 3 and 2 ... and Casey whispers loud enough across the green or even better sneezes and mutters " ONE HUNDRED MILLION " ... oh and TIger lips out ....

glad to see tiger has been picked he always makes for good viewing. He is not the weak link though Cink will struggle and Kim should have got his place.

I think Corey Pavin is mad to leave Kim out his team,he was their best player in the last Ryder Cup.As for the captains picks,Monty will be rubbing his hands that he has picked out of form players!!!!!!Bring it on.

Luke Alexander says...

Woods is world number one and a fierce competitor and the event will be all the better for him being there.

Posted 21:07 7th September 2010

Pete Coley says...

I think Tiger may actually be able to play this Ryder Cup with no expectations on his shoulders and that means he is without doubt a man to be feared. I think we might see Tiger being more of a team player than ever this year. I won''t be suprised if we see this being the event that changes his career back round again!

Daniel Sher says...

He is still world number 1. enough said

Mark Hirschel says...

Have to agree with Dave''s comments. Tiger is a massive draw and the event will be that much more entertaining with him in it. I have a funny feeling that he will find his form in time for the cup and cause a few problems for Europe. That said, I still dont believe that they will win in the end as I see Europe taking it by a whisker.

Mark Barrie says...

Tiger is the man who will pull in the crowds, nobody really cares what he did in his private life. He may even win it for the yanks. Great pick Corey, well done

Kenny Magee says...

Great to see tiger getting a pick for the Ryder Cup.This will enhance the cup and will give the European team more motivation.

Lee Martin says...

nobody can be as good as him and play that bad its deliberate ,now that he has been picked just watch him go he will be called the Americans saviour they will win and everything will be forgiven con man of the highest standard put your wages on the Americans

Roger Morton says...

Posted 17:54 7th September 2010
