Rose & Immelman: tipped for success

We all think Tiger is going to win all four Majors don't we? But realistically he can't.

Move over Mystic Meg - the Golf Night experts have been gazing into their crystal balls.

As 2007 draws to a close, our minds are already turning to next year and our experts used Thursday night's edition of Golf Night to tell us who they think will end up as the winners of next year's Majors.

Robert Lee and Mark Roe both made their predicitions - and both avoided the temptation to say Tiger Woods will win them all!

Here is what they said:

Masters

Robert: TREVOR IMMELMAN

He's played well at the Masters before and I do think Trevor, who recently won the Nedbank Challenge, is due a big event somewhere. Players tend to play well at the Masters most years if they like the golf course and plainly he likes the set-up there. He's a very good putter and he's powerful so I can really see him winning it. At some point he is going to break through and win a Major, so why not there?

Mark: TIGER WOODS

It has to be Woods for the Masters for me. Zach Johnson pipped him last year, but Tiger putted so poorly and I think Woods is synonymous with the Masters. I just think he's going to win there.

US Open

Robert: TIGER WOODS

I agree with Mark about how Tiger likes to play at Torrey Pines, so he's going to win that tournament. We all think Tiger is going to win all four don't we? But realistically he can't.

Mark: TIGER WOODS

He's won five times at Torry Pines and I think he just loves the golf course. So I think it's nailed on. He's 25/1 to win the grand slam and those are appalling odds. It has never been achieved in the world of golf, so those odds are farcical really.

The Open

Robert: JUSTIN ROSE

Justin Rose is 7/1 to win a Major next year and those odds are a joke. Some players don't win a Major ever - you look at Monty and the career that he's had. To win a Major in just one year seems strange, but the bookies don't get it wrong very often. I should know!

Mark: LEE WESTWOOD

You can get to the point where you keep picking Tiger Woods to win every tournament because he's such a huge favourite every time he plays, but I just feel Westwood has a Major championship in him. Having watched Padraig Harrington win at Carnoustie, he'll feel he is every bit as good as him, if not better in terms of the number of tournaments he's won. I think he can win it, I really do.

US PGA

Robert: ADAM SCOTT

Rather like Immelman I feel Adam Scott is one of those big-stage young players that hasn't done it yet at the ultimate level and I think his turn is going to come. He's a wonderful golfer and we always talk about stringing four rounds together, but he's played well in and won big tournaments. He won the Players' Championship, which is almost a Major. So he can win one for sure.

Mark: PHIL MICKELSON

We saw him win this year at the HSBC event in China. After a dramatic collapse on the final day, he managed to complete the job in the play-off. It was all very exciting stuff and you had to take your hat off to the World No.2 for showing all of his grit and determination to go out in the play-off, after all that had happened in the preceding three hours, and prevail. That proves he has got what it takes.
