Amir Khan will hold talks with several American trainers before making a decision on who he will be working with in the future.
The 21-year-old, who signed a new contract with promoter Frank Warren on Monday, split with Oliver Harrison in April and was looked after by Dean Powell in the run-up to the most recent defence of his Commonwealth lightweight title against Michael Gomez.
But the Bolton bomber is set for talks with Freddie Roach and other big-name trainers across the pond as he approaches the next phase of his career and a world title shot.
"Amir is going to America to speak to several coaches and has to see how he gets on with them," Warren said.
"It's a major decision to make because Amir is coming up to his 19th professional fight and whoever he chooses has to be for keeps."
Khan is pencilled in to fight again on September 6 at the MEN Arena but Warren maintains his prodigy is still some way from challenging for the world title.
"I very much doubt Amir will be ready for a world title shot this year but it depends on circumstances and who is around at the time," Warren added.
"But if I was telling the truth I would think he'd need a couple more fights before he is ready. I liken Amir's situation to Theo Walcott's at Arsenal.
"There were plenty of times I was sat there thinking Theo wasn't going to do it for the Arsenal.
"But he started getting stronger and Arsene Wenger brought him on at the right time and he did the business towards the end of last season.
"It's the same with Amir - we will not rush him because when he contests a world title fight he needs to be ready to defend it again and again."
Johnny Nelson expects Nathan Cleverly's youth to overcome the wisdom of Tony Oakey on Friday Fight Night.
Adam Smith reports back from Ricky Hatton's training camp and is impressed with what he's seen so far.
It may be broke in terms of world titles, but Glenn McCrory believes British boxing is far from bankrupt.
