Breidis Prescott believes his harsh upbringing will stand him in good stead when he takes on Amir Khan on September 6.
The undefeated Colombian was brought up on the streets of Barranquilla by his father, who was also a boxer and is now a trainer, and admits he quickly learned how to survive.
"It's hard in Colombia - you have to learn to look after yourself," he told Sky Sports News. "Because I could box the other boys in the school would pay me to fight their bullies.
"My grandfather and father were both boxers and I grew up in a gym. Boxing has given me great things and I want to reward my parents.
"I'm getting more tense as the fight gets closer, but I'm ready for it."
Prescott's Mum is very proud of her son's achievements, but is happy for him to continue to follow his dreams.
"Of course I miss Briedis when he's away, but he has to be disciplined in his training.
"He helps us out with money and everyone in the family and around this area is very proud of him."
