De La Hoya: Contemplating future
My family and even my wife will tell me 'that's enough, accept it - that's it. You don't have it no more, just accept it'.
Oscar De La Hoya
Quotes of the week
Oscar De La Hoya admits he still has not decided whether he will return to the boxing ring or to retire from the sport.
The 35-year-old, 10-time world champion was put to the sword over eight rounds by Manny Pacquiao at welterweight in Las Vegas last December prompting calls for the 'Golden Boy' to hang up his gloves.
In the ring following his laboured and unimpressive performance, De La Hoya told Pacquiao's trainer and his own former handler Freddie Roach: "You were right, I just don't have it anymore."
Yet despite the speculation that his sixth defeat in a 45-fight professional career would be his last, De La Hoya said he still had not made up his mind.
"You know, I really haven't made a decision," De La Hoya said.
"I've been thinking about that, I've been going back and forth and everybody and their mother is telling me to hang them up, but I have to be certain."
"There are a lot of questions out there, obviously," he continued. "People will come up to me and say 'why were you so light?' or 'were you overtrained?', 'why didn't you have (former trainer Floyd) Mayweather senior in your corner?'
"So there are all those questions."
De La Hoya admitted that those closest to him have asked him to retire to concentrate on his role as president of Golden Boy Promotions.
"My family and even my wife will tell me 'that's enough, accept it - that's it. You don't have it no more, just accept it'," he added.
"So I really haven't made that firm decision. I've been vacationing and not thinking about it, just being with the family but hopefully soon I will make that firm and last decision and we'll see what happens.
"There are a lot of questions out there that need to be answered and I'll figure it out."
