Haye lays into Klitschko

Haye: Fired up

He doesn't entertain. Yes he's a gentleman but you should judge a fighter on what he does once the bell rings, not what he does outside the ring.

David Haye laid into Wladimir Klitschko at a press conference in London on Monday - then refused to apologise for his trash-talking in the lead up to their fight on June 20.

The Briton, who will challenge Klitschko for the IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles in Schalke's football stadium in Germany, continued to show little respect for the champion on their latest public outing together.

Once again wearing a t-shirt showing him clutching the severed heads of the Klitschko brothers, the 28-year-old from Bermondsey said the Ukrainian should be judged on what he does inside the ring, not out of it.

"Yes I have a personal dislike for Wladimir. He sucks, he's crap. I don't like his style. I don't like what he represents," he said.

Embarrassing

"He doesn't entertain. Yes he's a gentleman but you should judge a fighter on what he does once the bell rings, not what he does outside the ring.

"He doesn't give value for money, like I do. He's embarrassing, everything he does in the ring is embarrassing.

"I want him to fight like a man, not run like a bitch. Stand and fight me Wladimir Bitchko!

"I'm going to smash his head in and he will be bleeding on the floor."

In fairness to Haye, Klitschko has done little more than go through the motions to successfully defend his titles against Sultan Ibragimov, Tony Thompson and Hasim Rahman in his last three fights.

And in Haye he will at least know that he enters the ring with a man who is looking for more than just a big paycheck.

Not demeaning

And the Brit insisted that provoking Klitschko into fighting him by bad-mouthing he and his brother Vitali is not bringing the sport into disrepute.

"I haven't overstepped the mark at all. As long as he doesn't run like normal, everyone will be happy," he said.

"I don't think I'm demeaning myself or British boxing one bit. I'm just letting him and his family know that I'm coming after them.

"I'll get Vitali to throw in the towel. If Wladimir is good enough to stay on his feet then his brother will have to save him."

As ever, the 33-year-old champion was unfazed by the rhetoric, although again promised to inflict a slow and painful defeat on his opponent on the night, claiming Haye is the one who should be embarrassed.

"David should have stayed at cruiserweight. He's only had two heavyweight fights but now wants to be champion," he said.

"He's been very provocative. He cut my head off for one magazine - that's pretty provocative so I decided to fight this boy.

Not sport

"Now I see Haye with a cut off head of my brother, my family member. What's going to be next? My dad's head? My mother's head?

"Will he attack my religion, my race? This is over the edge - it's not sport. This guy will be punished.

"After 12 rounds he will be a pizza face - then I will knock him out. He needs to be taught how to behave.

"I don't want to waste my energy on this trash talk. It's embarrassing for the sport. He's a loser and I want to shut his mouth."

The fight is expected to attract a sell-out crowd of around 70,000 in Gelsenkirchen with 47,000 tickets already having been sold.

Wayne Smith says...

the haye maker is going to knock them both out! tyson would have beaten them both on the same night! the heavyweight devision is the laughing stock of boxing, it has been since lennox lewis retired.

Martin Dronfield says...

For a man who has had one fight at heavy weight and has already been knocked out at cruserweight Haye is very dis-respectfull, he is lucky to be getting a tiltle shot at all. The heavyweight division is weak at the moment, that is the only reason Haye is in his current position, rewind 10 years to tyson, bowe, lewis, holyfield and haye would not get a mention. Its a pity haye doesn't have the endurance or durability to back up his mouth, enjoy your moment in the sun, it wont last,

Dave White says...

David haye is just promoting this fight, more than you can say for the characterless klitschko brothers, and its working with 47000 tickets already sold. Also he usually back up what comes out of his mouth, so is it really trash talking or factual statements, i know which i think!

Xander Robertson says...

David Haye is going to knock Klitschko out in 3 rounds, Klitschko cannot take a punch and David Haye is going to give the heavyweight division a much needed shake up and will be to fast for either brother and what they wont be expecting is that power.

Robbie Herd says...

Oh dear how embarrassing has Haye made himself look. I thought that boxing had moved on from this pathetic escapade but clearly not. I wanted Haye to win this fight but now I'm not so sure. He has let the sport down badly, why can't he just go about his job with professionalism like Calzaghe or Hatton or Lennox Lewis. Drop the nastiness David outside the ring and let the hatred out in it. Its not rocket science..............

Darren White says...

Classic stuff. At long last someone is breathing some much needed life into a division that has spent years as a joke. Haye is not emnbarrassing to the sport. Whats embarrassing is the ridiculous world title fights we have had to endure at what should be the most exciting weight dividion out there.
