Valero closing on big time

Valero: Reign of terror

Also see

Edwin Valero took a step closer to a big-money showdown with one of the big names in boxing by retaining his WBC lightweight title in Mexico on Saturday.

The unbeaten Venezuelan stopped his 27th opponent in succession when Antonio DeMarco failed to answer the bell for the 10th round in his second title defence.

Valero, who gave up his WBA super-featherweight strap in 2008 to continue his reign of terror at 135lbs, dominated the fight despite suffering a deep gash to the right temple following an early accidental elbow.

Despite having only twice been beyond seven rounds, Valero refused to rely on his knockout punch and instead gave DeMarco a working over with multiple combinations and dazzling movement in a battle of the southpaws.

'Dinamita's team could have trouble matching their hard-hitting fighter this year with up-and-coming fighters no doubt keen to swerve the 28-year-old, while Valero is not yet a household name experienced enough to fight the likes of Juan Manuel Marquez or Manny Pacquiao.

And with Marquez likely to move up in weight to fight either Amir Khan or Ricky Hatton this summer, Valero will have to be content with trying to unify the lightweight belts...for now.

Valero have not got yet the real test of his boxing career....moving up to light welterweight.... it would be an acid test for him by facing first Juan Manuel Marquez , Amir han....b4 dreaming of manny pacquiao.

I've watched Edwin Valero a number of times now and he is more than just a power puncher. He showed more so in his last fight against a bigger man with longer reach that he can step in and out and has quite a decent defence. Full credit to him to because the elbow early doors left a bad gash an he still had the heart to persistantly attack and wear Demarco down. This guy is ferocious and certainly on the right road to getting some big name fights and quite possibly dominating his surrounding weight divisions.

all the so called big names will use the fact that valero cannot fight in vegas or new york as an excuse to avoid him, amir khan would not last 60 seconds with this bloke, take a look on you tube and tou will see why!!! valero is and will continue to be the most avoided boxer around. 26-26-26ko's do you think many fighters will want to get in the ring with him unless its for big money and that will only happen in vegas or new york where the money is, which is a shame as valero is mustard and khan is happy riding the gravy train!!!

Valero might not be ready for the Pacman at this stage, but JMM would be an ideal opponent before he moves up to light welter, a big name, in decline, fighting above his natural weight, pretty much the same reason golden boy wants amir khan to fight him. If JMM steps up to LW you can bet Valero wont be far behind him with very little more for him to achieve at lightweight, and lots of big names at LW

Clinton Mccutcheon says...

Problem with this guy is he cannot get a license to fight in the states due to a head injury he sustained previously in some kind of crash. That's really going to hamper his chances at bigger money fights.

good fighter, fights very similar to manny Pacquiao, quick volume punching southpaw. They are talking about a fight with Timothy Bradley and what a fight that would be. I feel that will prove if hes the real deal because I feel bradley is an excellent all round fighter who I believe has the tools to convincingly beat Valero

I wonder if Valero could fight here in England, with that brain problem, or what ever it is. I'd pay to see him fight on these shores, I'd probably even pay to watch him on box office. Even though it would probably be over in the first couple of rounds, it'd be exciting as long as it lasted!
