Mayweather Jr: taking it easy
I'm not interested in rushing to do anything.
Floyd Mayweather Jr
Quotes of the week
The long-anticipated showdown between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao appears unlikely to take place this year as negotiations between the two camps are at an apparent standstill.
Pacquiao's promoter, Top Rank, had set a July 17 deadline for exclusive talks and, with nothing agreed, can now explore other potential opponents - namely Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito - for the Filipino's next fight on November 13.
The rivals, widely regarded as the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, almost came to an agreement earlier this year but the deal collapsed because Pacquiao was reticent about blood testing close to the fight.
Instead, Pacquiao routed Joshua Clottey before about 50,000 fans at Cowboys Stadium in March, while Mayweather Jr easily defeated Shane Mosley in May to remain unbeaten in 41 contests.
"I'm not interested in rushing to do anything," Mayweather Jr told the Associated Press on July 18 in Miami, where he was coaching a charity basketball game.
He added: "I'm not really thinking about boxing right now.
"I'm just relaxing. I fought about 60 days ago, so I'm just enjoying myself, enjoying life, enjoying my family and enjoying my vacation."
Top Rank's Bob Arum, although not having spoken directly to the fighter, believes Mayweather Jr might be reluctant to take on Pacquiao this year because of the legal woes of Roger Mayweather, his uncle and long-time trainer.

Without going into a big lecture, in the last few years Manny has fought men two to three weights above him and Mayweather has fought men two to three weights below him. Although he did actually fight a pensioned off Mosley who nearly finished him in the second round - Pacman will destroy him and his legacy - thats why Mayweather is terrified to fight him!

Re Danny Rossi - are you a deluded Pacquiao fan? Mayweather will beat Pacquiao hands down. Pacquiao will continuously get frustrated by Mayweathers defensiveness. Mayweather will exploit Pacquiao in very much the same way he did JMM. Marquez was very unlucky against Pacquiao and many though JMM was robbed. Just wait and see what happens, Mayweather will be one of the greatest of all time once he beats the Pacman.

Re TOM WALSHE: A scorecard of 114-111 for JMM in the 1st Pac-Marquez fight is not a valid card, you should re-watch it. Because many Pacquiao haters pedal the myth that JMM dominated that fight, people believe it, but that was not the case at all. It''s yet another myth that Nevada judges favour aggression - if that''s true then how did Floyd Mayweather win a wide, unanimous decision by boxing on the backfoot in a fight he clearly lost to the aggressive Jose Luis Castillo? And Lampley is a TV presenter, his statement about "scoring blood" is utterly non-sensical - a judge simply does not forget what is happening in the fight and automatically score against a guy with a bloody nose, the very idea is ridiculous. You are kidding yourself if you think Manny is ducking Floyd, look into the matter further and get back to me. Mayweather is the one conjuring up roadblocks here. It is 100% Pacquiao''s prerogative to refuse Floyd''s demands if he does not want to be strong-armed... because Floyd''s demands are outwith the actual rules of the sport!!

Sad that it seems unlikely to happen. I know there are many pro/anti Floyd views on here. Although - if i had to stake my life on it - i''d go for Floyd , prob on points , i''d be rooting for Pac . Although obviously not if i was literally staking my life on it. What i don''t understand is that Floyd was totally happy in fighting Mosley but seems reluctant to fight Pac now , and i''d say SSM is/was at least an equal threat to Floyd and look what Floyd did with him. All i can think of is that Floyd feels uncomfortable in the thought of facing a guy with the speed of Pac. For all the guys Floyd''s beaten , i can''t remember him fighting anyone who could touch him for speed and speed is a huge weapon. It seems Floyd has gone full circle and now , after he pretty much called Pac out , after the drug testing demands which Pac then agreed to , Floyd is "not rushing", By the way , i think Marg (if there are no weight clauses) could derail the fight by beating Pac. I guess however if Pac beat Marg Floy''d be eeven more reluctant to fight him

I think it''s much more difficult to call than many of you seem to. There are too many variables. Pacman is pound-for-pound the best balanced, most speedy and effective offensive boxer around. Money is arguably one of the two or three best defensive boxers of all time. In terms of speed its very close. Hand-speed I''d give it to Mayweather, if I had to choose. But manny has the faster footwork. IMO And probably faster combinations. Both have a good chin. Knockouts power: Can''t see floyd take Pacman out with a single punch, only after he''s worn him down. Can''t se him throwing high-number punch combinations either to do it either. Too dangerous and not his style. Manny could, I think, take Mayweather out with a single shot. In my opinion Mayweather has a good understanding of psychology. I think the whole drug test thing is just his way of trying to control pacman, to say to him " I can MAKE you do stuff you don;t want to". It''s how you''d train a dog basically. And it''s used in many of disciplines. It''s the same with the whole ring entrance stuff. It''s all about saying " I am the alpha male". I think Pacman understands this and that''s why he''s reluctant to comply. It''s a shame. But I think it''s Floyd''s great failing. The thing keeping him from true greatness. Greatness is not a win loss record. It''s who you are. He isn''t. He''s much too interested in not doing any more than he has to. Either man could win this. Bt it almost certainly won''t happen. It''s all about this drug test. If Pacman complies he''ll lose. But he won''t so Mayweather will refuse to fight him.

none of you know what ur talking about, Pac Mans losses all came before Freddie Roach took over, so clearly he has gone up 10 levels since then, so the marquez argument doesnt even apply. and even if it did u could say the same about floyd struggling past de la hoya, many ppl think de la hoya won that fight too, me included, when pac man destroyed de la hoya. but the fact remains, as great a fighter as Floyd is he hand picks fighters who are nobodies or past it, or ppl who he should beat hands down, hes more worried about losing his 0 than anything else. pac man is fearless, he will fight a grizzly bear, get the fight on floyd, the world wants it and we will see who the best is. tough fight to call. but ill say floyd will win.

So many people have been deluded by Floyd''s own self-propaganda and his performances in fights vs handpicked opponents. Mayweather may be very aesthetically pleasing and technically proficient from a purist perspective, but this does not make him infallible nor worthy of adulation. Aside from the obvious (and generally accepted by informed objective fans) cherrypicking policy which Floyd has followed over the last 5 years at 140 and 147, "Money" has also demonstrated that he, like every other fighter, has his flaws and limitations. Jose Luis Castillo beat Floyd by using intelligent pressure and bodypunching, Jesus Chavez and Oscar De La Hoya gave him real problems early on by hemming him in with volume punching against the ropes, Zab Judah used his speed and southpaw stance to outbox Floyd for a stretch, and both Shane Mosley and DeMarcus Corley have had Floyd all over the place with only single shots. There is more than enough evidence in there to suggest that Floyd is eminently beatable by the right fighter... a fast southpaw that throws a lot of punches, fights aggressively, can hit to the body, has good speed and movement, a granite chin, and serious power. Sound like anyone in particular???

Re Stewart Home: I have seen the two Marquez fights and I''m not "pedalling a silly myth". It''s a well known fact in boxing that the Nevada State Athleitc Commission''s judges favour aggressive, pressure boxers and sometimes blood which is mentioned many times by Lampley on HBO. It''s for that reason Pacquiao got the decisions in those two fights; he chased Marquez around the ring throwing crazy punches and JM was countering with hard shots every time. First fight 114-111, 9 rounds to 3 Marquez he dictated the fight and also threw less punches and landed more. Second fight 114-113, 7 rounds to 5 Marquez! Also a knockdown isn''t an automatic point as 2 of the 3 judges scoring the Pacquiao-Cotto fight scored round 3 10-9 eventhough Pacquiao knocked him down as they thought Cotto won the rest of the round. Although I''m not defending the wronged judge as round one of the 1st fight as it was definitely 10-6. Pacquiao is the one ducking Mayweather as Floyd said after Mosley fight he''ll fight Manny if he takes the tests. What valid reason does Pacquiao have not to take them? It''s been proven by doctors that giving blood doesn''t weaken you and he has several tattoos which indicates he''s not afraid of needles.

Re James Barnett - that''s some pretty feeble boxing analysis mate. Pacquiao will keep "annoying" Floyd, and Floyd will get "fed up" with Pacquiao!?! Dire stuff. And I don''t understand how you can think Mayweather will KO Pacquiao - the only guys Floyd has stopped at welter have been tiny C-class Sharmba Mitchell and china-chinned light-welter Hatton (and it took Floyd 10 rounds, Pac managed it in 2 at Hatton''s favoured weight). Floyd couldn''t stop a mental weakling like Judah or an overweight Marquez, so how is he going to stop a guy that shook off Miguel Cotto''s best punches like they were nothing?! Finally - you couldn''t be more wrong about Pac needing the fight more than Floyd. Pac was named the official Fighter Of The Decade recently. You are remembered for who you fought and who you beat, nothing more, and Pac has Floyd beat in that regard, and history will recognize that.

So silly - seriously, best pound for piund fighter from 200-2010 (Many) what is wrong with people - where have use been. It anything to do with who he has beat compared to Manny - its facts. He has beaten everyone who has stepped into a ring with him! Thats facts! Manny is a risk fighter - he approaches with agreession and although it is good in the eye, simply - Flloyd will just pcik punches off him and win in points. I would guarantee my life on it. No matter what is asked of Flloyd he does it. Too right he has the right to dictate terms for this fight - he is the best, he is who everyone wants to see, and when he beats him some other wannabe will come up and shout their mouth off that they can beat him. Accept it - the guy is too good! Lifestyle Flashy!!!

Re TOM WALSHE - I think you are a fan of Mayweather, but I don't think you are a knowledgable fan of boxing as a sport, because you have misunderstood a very basic point in your rush to defend Floyd. Marquez was a featherweight, who carried his weight well to superfeather, but whose effectiveness was compromised when he moved outwith that weight region and fought at lightweight - and therefore was a shadow of his former self a further 2 weight classes above that vs Floyd. Watch Marquez's displays at feather and superfeather, then watch how he struggled against the mediocre yet physically formidable Juan Diaz at 135. Marquez's frame and body type do not allow him to add weight without compromising his effectiveness, he gets progressively worse as he goes up. This is the same with most fighters. Pacquiao is the opposite. Unlike Marquez, he looks better at 135, 140 & 147 than he did at 122 & 126. He has proven himself vs Cotto and Clottey above 140, whereas Marquez had never even fought above 135. That's why a Pacquiao-Mayweather match is a superfight, and Mayweather-Marquez was a cherrypicked mismatch.

If the fight ever does happen then Floyd will stand Manny on his head. Manny is used to having things go his own way. He likes to rush the pace and bully his opponets however he will find this a very difficult task with Floyd. I would predict a landslide poits victory for Floyd if the fight ever happens!

Re JOHN SMITH - To answer your points in sequence - it is not Arum who has pushing the fight without Pac's consent, because it was Pac who eventually agreed to Floyd's ridiculous drug-testing excuse, not Arum. Floyd does not deserve to call the shots with Pacquiao, because Pacquiao is the pound-for-pound number 1, the official Fighter Of The Decade for 2000-2010, and he has filled out a stadium, which Floyd has never done. Floyd is unbeaten, but Manny has beaten better fighters. Let me ask you, who was the greater heavyweight, Marciano or Ali? Who was the greater fighter, Sugar Ray Leonard or Joe Calzaghe? You see, a zero means nothing, it's all about who you fought. And I most certainly did not tip Mosley to beat Mayweather. Shane was 38, coming off a long lay-off, and has always struggled with boxers. Miguel Cotto had already beaten a better version of Shane!! Jose Luis Castillo beat Floyd first time out, and I think Pacquiao, Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez would all give him hell as well.

Re Tom Walshe - You are pedalling a silly myth regarding the Pacquiao-Marquez fights. Have you actually seen them, or are you just going off what Floyd says in interviews? I scored the 1st fight 115-112 for Pacquiao... a fight that Pacquiao WOULD have won on the scorecards if one judge had not made an error in his scoring (awarding Pac a 10-7 round for 3 knockdowns when it is supposed to be an automatic 10-6). I scored the rematch 114-114, but that was scoring a round 10-10 which many people (including Lederman) scored for Pacquiao. Floyd Mayweather was beaten by Jose Luis Castillo in their 1st fight (I scored it 115-113 for JLC), and I'd say Marquez is a better fighter than Castillo ever was, so Floyd has had some rough nights himself.
