Burns: Goes into fight as underdog
Ricky Burns says Roman Martinez will be punished for any complacency in their WBO super-featherweight world title fight on Saturday.
The Puerto Rican fighter is the strong favourite to come out on top when he defends his championship against Burns in Glasgow.
The 27-year-old from Coatbridge is finally getting his chance title shot after the bout was delayed several times before being confirmed in June.
And although Burns accepts that he will head into the contests as a huge underdog, he believes he has been underestimated by Martinez.
"When I first took the fight, I knew I was the big underdog," he said.
"I don't know if Roman Martinez thinks he's going to come over here and it's going to be an easy fight and he's going to knock me out.
"I think he has underestimated me and, if he has, he's in for a shock."
A confident Burns says he is planning to catch his opponent off-guard when the two fighters face off at Kelvin Hall.
"That's my plan. Saturday night, I'm leaving there as world champion," he said.
He added: "This is the toughest week. You're all ready to go and it's just about playing the waiting game now.
"All the hard work has been done in the gym and it's basically just about ticking over, keeping sharp and keeping on top of your weight.
"It's all about the countdown now to Saturday night. Although people say I'm quite big for the weight, I'm always in shape.
"Even when I've not got fights coming up, I'm always in the gym. Making the weight is never a problem for me. It's just playing this waiting game now, as it's dragging on for me."
