Witter: Planning to carry on until he turns 40
It would be the biggest fight we've had in Britain for so long. You are talking about two world champions in their prime getting in the ring. It would be bigger than Benn v Eubank and would sell out any arena worldwide.
Junior Witter
Quotes of the week
Bravery, toughness and determination are all traits you would associate with the sport of boxing, but patience? In a sport where taking your time can be your downfall, it is rare to see a fighter display such a characteristic.
Yet since the start of the decade Junior Witter has been more patient than any saint.
Throughout the last eight years he has shown unbelievable persistence in pursuit of what he feels he deserves - a chance to fight Ricky Hatton.
So amid the many, many local kids who come in to the Wincobank gym run by Team Ingle to learn as much about discipline as about how to duck and dive, the 34-year-old is busy preparing for his third defence of the WBC light-welterweight belt.
Timothy Bradley is next in line for The Hitter on May 10, an unbeaten American who has been given a title tilt following the withdrawal of Demetrius Hopkins.
After his defeat to Floyd Mayweather, Hatton will be back down at light-welterweight for his next fight just two weeks later, though once again it won't be Witter he's facing.
Instead Mexican Juan Lazcano will be the man to go up against the hometown favourite at Eastlands Stadium, a bout billed as the homecoming for a city's hero but one that his long-time rival has branded a 'gimme fight'.
Hatton has never been far from the Bradford-born boxer's mind now for over seven years but, despite his constant taunts and attempts to goad his compatriot, they are yet to meet in the ring.
Such a blockbuster battle between contrasting styles - Witter the slick, counter-punching boxer against the body-beating, all-action fighter in Hatton - would be a big hit on both sides of the pond, particularly with the pair now the best two in the division.
But with the Hitman already lining up money-spinning nights against American Paulie Malignaggi, who will fight on the Eastlands undercard against Lovemore N'Dou on May 24, before a mooted re-match with the Pretty Boy, it appears Witter will have to wait a little longer yet.
However, he is adamant he will eventually get his chance, insisting that the fight is closer than ever before because of the public demand to see it finally come to fruition.
"I think that fight is around the corner," he exclusively told skysports.com. "There are two things he can do - he can box me or retire, and I don't think he's going to retire.
"We've had arguments in the past and he is a good fighter, he's just not the best fighter. His next fight doesn't impress me one little bit, he should win easily.
"He's going to discredit everything he's ever done if he doesn't get in the ring with me. He's got no excuses.
"The public are absolutely screaming for it. I remember people four years ago telling me they'd pay a £1,000 for a ringside seat for that fight, and now the stakes are even higher.
"It would be the biggest fight we've had in Britain for so long. You are talking about two world champions in their prime getting in the ring. It would be bigger than Benn v Eubank and would sell out any arena worldwide."
Rather than sit back, and bide his time, Witter is instead aiming to clean up the rest of the light-welterweight division and force Hatton's hand. After all, if the mountain won't come to Mohamed, then Mohamed may have to come to the mountain.
Time could become an issue with Hatton hinting at early retirement, something Witter refuses to contemplate to such a degree that he's planning to keep climbing into the ring until he's at least 40.
"I'm looking at a unification fight as soon as possible, before the end of this year. I'm looking at September time," he added.
"We're looking at (WBO champion Ricardo) Torres and (WBA belt holder Andreas) Kotelnik. We've talked to both management teams and they are both interested.
"I'm in good shape all the time and as long as everything keeps going the way it is, I can see me going for another six years.
"I do a job I love, around people in a gym I get on well with and have a lot of respect for. It works well and I'm very happy with the situation."
Witter certainly seems happy with his lot right now, but he'll never be completely satisfied with his career until he gets that long-awaited crack at Hatton. For now, he'll just have to keep waiting.
Jim Watt fears the Italian judges could be high among Colin Lynes' concerns ahead of Friday Fight Night.
Ricky Hatton is coming home, live on Sky Box Office, but first he is ready to answer YOUR questions! .
Glenn McCrory and the north east salute Paul Truscott, welcome Larry Holmes and prepare for Mike Tyson.

What would the point be in Hatton fighting Witter? I for one dont want to see that fight. Witter is and always was a big mouth and his humiliation on saturday night goes to prove that he isnt even fit to lace up Hattons boots. Hatton will have it tough against Lazcano no doubt about that but i reckon he should have enough in the tank to win it. Hopefully a rematch against Mayweather wont be too far away.

Hopefully Witter will now stop chasing Hatten, he is fooling no one but himself if he thinks he can operate consistantly at world level. He is a victim of the Ingle camp, whose fighters generally fiddle about, until opponents make mistakes and then catch them from angles. This does not work at world level against the very best, examples are Naz, Bomber, Ryan Rhodes and now Witter, reflexs only get you so far, look at all the other world champions who have held titles over time, Eubank, Lewis, Joe C, Hopkins all solid boxers, good defences, technically sound, Ingle fighters very seldom fall into this catagory and hence do not stay world champions for long if at all.

as i said in the first thread on this page, witter would be found out by hatton and knocked out. if it was hatton and not bradley witter wouldn't have lasted five rounds and would have been knocked out. lets hope it makes him realise he aint in ricky's league and needs a long hard think before running his mouth again.

HaHa oh Witter deary oh dear me what a no show you were. Mixed views on here about hatton vs witter, come on people if on saturday it was hatton rather than (BRADLEY who) witter would have been destroyed. rather than using average joe opponents in notts to prove yourself to the yanks why not spend a few fights over there against there best at different weights????? hatton did and yes granted he aint the best at a weight up above his own but he aint quit yet hes stuck at it and battled with the best and again wants to battle with the best his next fight is a keep fit fight for pauli which will be in america and then he will go towards the winner mayweather vs de la hoya and who are these people . . . . . . AMERICAS BEST !!!

Junior Witter has fallen on his own sword with the dire performance against an honest - but by no means special Timothy Bradley on Saturday Night. I think he had is mind on looking good in order to set up a fight with Hatton but on that performance he wouldnt last 6 rounds with the hitman. ok every boxer has a bad day at the office but saturday was awful. Apart from the first round Witter never looked comfortable and struggled with the in your face style of bradley, his chin proudley on display, no defence meant bradley could constantly tap his jaw all night long and i dont know what happened to his defence i mean its is a boxing fundamental keep your head moving, chin out of range and make sure your hard to hit. Fair play bradley studied him apparentley witter didnt do his homework and got exposed. At 34 i dont know if he can be relevant again as he now has to start from the bottom unless theres a rematch clause either way theres more chance of Lennox lewis returniing to clean up the heavyweight scene than of a Hatton /Witter bout! Talk is cheap and Hatton all of a sudden looks like the cat that got the cream as he always said Witter wasnt on his radar. Oh well at least Carl Froch looks useful and a potential world champion!!

The only reason Hatton is fighting Lazcano is to warm up for Malignaggi. Even the greats like De La Hoya take warm up fights for championship fights, so please people get a grip and could everyone please stop talking about Witter being someone who could beat Hatton because it just makes you sound silly and you know nothing about boxing. Witter lost against a very average fighter that a lot of domestic fighters could have beaten. People like to knock our true great fighters like Hatton and Calzaghe must be jealousy and the fact people like losers like Witter.

well well well.....witter came a cropper!!! how embarrassed he must be....from the 8th round on he looked completely empty and ready to go...wobbled everytime bradley landed a big shot (even tho he's not a world class puncher) he can only dream of hatton now...he would get seriously hurt against ricky so this guy did him a favour! Bet ricky was sitting at home laughing his head off!! Doubt they'll be many Witter fans on here today!!!

Hatton v witter would be a non event, Witter was shown up on saturday night by an average fighter at best.Hatton has been in with great fighters like Castillo and Mayweather in his last two fights. Im glad he ignored Witters jibes and insults to fight him as it would be a seriously one sided fight. Witter beat an average fighter in Vivian Harris last time out and all of a sudden he was a great fighter. Which is definetly not the case. what next for Witter retirement probably the best option he jst has to face the truth he isnt as good as HE thinks he is. Bradley fought a good fight used his jab well and couldnt miss with the right hook. But yet Witter couldnt work out a way to beat him. Think that says it all really

well - hope you can all see why Hatton didnt fight Witter. Witter lost to an OK fighter in Bradley, what a waste of time it would have been for Hatton to get in the ring. Why should Hatton waste his time with an average UK boxer when he can get massive pay days fighting class acts like Mayweather? Hatton now wants to pit himself against the BEST - possible Mayweather return next year shows a lot of courage (not even his natural weight!), Hatton does not want to fight just any old boxer like Witter. Its about the money and the glory - Hatton gets neither if he fought Witter - instead he bided his time and let someone else show up Witter for the average fighter he really is.

hatton is without a doubt the most over hyped fighter i can remember.why would anyone fight lazcano who no one has heard instead of witter. i think we all know why,i dont think he has ever fancied it against witter. the difference with calzaghe is that he has now fought and beat some tough young fighters. the reason hatton will fight mayweather again is because he will get a nice 10 million cheque, not because he believes he will win

Who is witter? that says a lot doesnt it. small name big mouth. lsot to a mediocre american and he wants to fight hatton. no chance. all witter is looking for is a big pay day and nothing else. witter might be big and well known in his hometown, however he has nothing to offer the wider boxing public. hattons doing it for all of the people.once again witter.who r u? who r u?a LOSER

There is a very good reason why Ricky's camp didn't want to fight the Bradford mouth, Just look to Nottingham yesterday. Witter was a never a draw for world boxing, hence why the fight isn't likely to happen. Ricky has his limitations but Junior was just limited full stop. Please can everyone just stop calling for this fight, it would struggle to sell out a community centre and that is because Junior Witter is uninspiring.(and now a loser!).

Everyone keeps acting like Hatton is a hero he's had numerous chances to shut Witter up before he fought in America bur it never happened. It's human nature to show someone how good you are if they call you out time and time again so surely Hatton can't fancy it? I honestly believe facing Witter would have been the perfect homecoming rather than facing someone hardly anyone has heard of let alone see fight!!! Granted Witter isn't a big name in America but all you hear Hatton saying is that this for the british fans etc etc...Well face Witter at Wembley Stadium and let all the British fight fans see what they want.

How can he be scared? After fighting in America, and getting knocked out with Floyd, he still wants to go back again and have another pop at him. And people say he is scared of Witter? get a grip people!

robert hegarty are you from this planet ricky hatton over rated? tyzu over the hill even with the ibf belt that was going to destroy hatton. let me guess calzaghe is a god,and hopikin isnt over the hill

Hatton has taken the easy option in fighting Laczano, the reasons he gave for not fighting Witter don`t make sense. Hatton loves the tag of the peoples champion yet he refuses to give the people what they want and it ain`t Hatton vs Laczano or Hatton vs Malignaggi the impression I got from the pre- Mayweather fight was Hatton and trainer Billy Graham were convinced they would beat Money Mayweather how wrong they were, a rematch would result in another knockout I believe. If Hatton retires without fighting Witter his legacy will be tarnished, without a doubt.

I think it's a little unfair to call him and ordinary world champion he is the divisions best at the moment and your probably right about the tyzu fight Robert hegarty but hatton is a very exciting fighter just look at how highly Arturo Gatti is regarded in america and hatton would have destroyed him and 95% of the fighters at or around welterweight just not good enough for the true top ie mayweather, cotto and de la hoya.As for the potential hatton vs witter i think you could very well se hatton lose not because he's a much better fighter just cause he has the style to frustrate Hatton and we know what happens when you can to that to him.

Johnny Bergin says...
robert hegarty knows nothing about boxing. Hatton beat Tyzu when he was world champion, which means nobody else had beaten tyzu for a long time before hatton dismantled him. as for Castillo he's just a poor version of the Hitman. With the exception of Mayweather the rest wouldnt beat ricky hatton at light welter, he would be to strong and fit and just simply out gun he's opponents. The reason he wont fight Witter is because he's not a big fight in America. How can anyone say he is scared of Witter when he fought Mayweather in America and wants a rematch with the legend again. I think He will fight Witter once he has fought Malignaggi and Mayweather again but this moment in time Witter aint big enough.

Ricky Hatton is the most over rated fighter I can remember....... Really who has he fought......An over the hill Tyzu......If Tyzu had been in his prime I would have given Hatton 3 rounds before Tyzu knocks him out.....Castillo would also have taken Hatton and as for Mayweather he showed the world how truly ordinary Ricky really is...... As for being a P4P ranked fighter I strongly disagree he's a good British fitghter but I can think of 5 fighters of similar weight that would beat Hatton.....Mayweather, Cotto, Paq, Campbell and Valero.....And if you think of some of the recent welters or round about who would Hatton beat at their best.....De layhoya NO NO NO, Tyzu NO NO NO, Mosely NO NO NO, Barerra NO NO NO, etc etc...... Hatton is an ordinary world champion who is one dimensinal, can fight at one weight and I honestly think that a Hatton Witter fight would be very close...... But having said all that I think it would be a great fight........SO COME ON RICKY LETS MAKE THE FIGHT WE ALL KNOW YOU ARE THE ONE MAKING EXCUSSES
