St Helens and Widnes legend Vince Karalius has died at the age of 76.

The tough-tackling loose forward, who also made 12 appearances for Great Britain, was one of rugby league's biggest stars in the 1950s and early 1960s.

Karalius won the Challenge Cup in 1955 and 1961 with Saints before moving on to Widnes, where he also became a successful coach.

Rugby Football League chief executive Nigel Wood led the tributes.

"His achievements mark him out as one of the best players of his generation and anybody who saw him in action will remember his energetic style," said Wood.

"Vince also contributed a great deal to rugby league as a coach and was highly successful when he took charge of the Widnes club and led them to a Wembley victory.

"We would like to send our deepest condolences and very best wishes to his family and friends at this time of great sadness."
