Brown: New Giants coach
An inexperienced Huddersfield side failed to claim the Infirmary Cup as they were beaten 32-18 by Halifax at the Shay.
The Giants were in front 18-16 at the break but did not manage to score a single point in the second half against their Championship opponents.
With new coach Nathan Brown watching on from the stands, some of the Super League outfit's rising stars were given a chance to impress.
And despite the defeat there were some positives to come out of the game for Huddersfield, not least a try on debut from Greg McNally.
The 18-year-old scrum-half marked his first appearance since signing from Whitehaven with one of the visitors' three scores in the opening 40 minutes.
McNally's try is likely to be his last this year for his new employers as he's heading back to his former club on a season-long loan deal.
Tom Burton and Craig Williams also crossed while Ed Barber's three successful conversions gave Huddersfield a slender advantage at the interval.
However Halifax eased clear afterwards, Ben Black leading the way with a try to go alongside his four successful conversions.
The Australian half-back went over in the second half, along with Bob Beswick and Jon Goddard, to make sure the hosts kept their hands on the trophy.
Paul Smith and Rob Worrincy had touched down in the opening stanza to keep the game, which went ahead after a morning pitch inspection, firmly in the balance.
