Warrington hope to take advantage of the latest opportunity to end their St Helens hoodoo when the two clubs clash on Saturday.

The Wolves, who are currently lying second in the engage Super League, have not beaten their local rivals for nine years.

That 56-22 victory at Wilderspool back in 2001 is their only win against Saints in the last 42 contests with the Merseyside club.

But Tony Smith's much-improved side secured their first victory over a top-four side this season when they beat Wigan at the DW Stadium two weeks ago and veteran forward Paul Wood heads into the match full of confidence.

Vital

"I actually played in that last win against Saints at Wilderspool," Wood said.

"It's been a long time coming but hopefully on Saturday we are going to do a job on them. It is a vital game for us now, the Saints and Wigan derbies are massive games for us.

"You get all the town talking about these two games. It should be a packed house and a really good game, a good test for us.

"There is a bit of pressure on us to perform but we have done well against Wigan and beaten them once.

"We've been beaten narrowly by Saints but we've got a chance to put that right on Saturday."

St Helens will be boosted by the return of veteran hooker Keiron Cunningham, who is the only player in the current squad who has lost to Warrington.

Drive

And coach Mick Potter does not believe that his side will approach the contest with a burning desire to extend their winning streak, but rather are simply looking for two crucial points.

Potter said: "This set of players, apart from Keiron, wasn't around 10 years ago to be worrying about not being beaten by Warrington.

"I'm sure they understand it but I'm not sure that drives them.

"They just want to be competitive always and I think that's what drives them. It's a good record to have and at some stage something's going to give there.

"It's just about two points and it's going to be a close-fought contest, I would have thought."
