'Fairytale stuff', is how coach Mick Potter described Saints' pulsating win over Castleford to clinch runners-up spot and a home play-off tie.

A try from skipper Keiron Cunningham with 20 seconds remaining saw Potters' men confirm a 40-30 win at Knowsley Road and take second spot from Warrington on points difference.

"It was certainly entertaining to say the least," said Potter "Watching from the sidelines it was a rollercoaster ride.

"The game shifted momentum and both sides came up with some great plays. To snatch it towards the end was fairytale stuff."

Of the late try scored by Cunningham, the Saints boss said: "For Keiron to score the winning try underneath the posts was fitting.

Commitment

"A lot will be written about Keiron - he is a legend of the modern game and just wants to do that little bit more.

"There was going to be no easy way through at the end and Keiron had four guys hanging off him at the end but he still managed to get it down.

"Castleford were on a roll for the 10 minutes before that but it worked our way at the end."

Castleford boss Terry Matterson was disappointed that the Tigers' season was ending early but said he was proud of the commitment shown by his players.

"We were not ready for the end of the season, but I am really proud of my guys," he said.

"It took a while for us to get in the game and we looked pretty good and just after half-time. When we scored I thought, 'here we go.'

Disappointed

"To come back from 30-10 to 30-all was tremendous. It took a couple of big plays from them at the end.

"We tried really hard and, although we have missed the top eight, we can certainly hold our heads up high with the way we have overcome injuries this season.

"That is the way it goes, but we are disappointed. Twelve weeks ago nobody would have thought we would have been in this position

"To come here and push them all the way, with what was riding on the game for them, was a great credit to our guys. But we have just come up a little bit short.

"I am proud of our guys and this will stand us in good stead for next year."
