Sean Gleeson brought the curtain down on his Wakefield career with farewell try and then signed on for the team against whom he had scored.

The 22-year-old Ireland international touched down for the Wildcats in their final game of the season against the Salford City Reds, although it proved in vain as the hosts prevailed 16-12 at The Willows.

But shortly after the final whistle the former Wigan man confirmed that he had agreed a deal to join Salford for next season.

Gleeson, who has signed a two-year contract, is the Reds' eighth signing for 2011 and their second recruit from the Wildcats following the capture of hooker Tevita Leo-Latu, who scored Wakefield's other try on Sunday.

They will join Stephen Wild, Luke Patten, Chris Nero, Vinnie Anderson, Iafeta Paleaessina and Phil Bailey at a new-look Salford next term.

Salford director of football Steve Simms said: "We have had to wait for this game to be over to complete the signing of Sean but he is yet another player who is going to bring exciting rugby to The Willows next season.

"We are looking strong, even at this stage where our season has only just finished and there are good times ahead.

"Today was about some of our old guard departing and we wish every single one of them the very best for the future but with all due respect to those who are leaving, we have signed some very good players for 2011 and beyond."

One of the departing players, captain for the day Stuart Littler, enjoyed a fairytale send-off by scoring the winning try to ensure the Reds finished 12th in the table, one place higher than last year.

Wakefield had to settle for 11th place after failing to notch the victory they needed to climb above Bradford, who finish 10th.
