Harlequins have appointed Rob Powell as acting head coach while they continue their search for a permanent successor to Brian McDermott.

The 30-year-old Powell was one of two assistants to McDermott, alongside New Zealander Latham Tawhai.

Powell, who coached Newcastle University and London Storm before being enlisted by McDermott for the start of the 2007 Super League season, will help the club rebuild their playing squad for 2011 following the departure of six regulars.

"I'm here to provide an important link for the players as we look to bring in new signings for next season and continue to develop local talent," he said.

Harlequins chairman David Hughes, who last week re-affirmed his commitment to the club up to 2014, said: "We are actively searching for a new head coach.

Guidance

"In the meantime, there is a lot of player-related activity and preparation for next season which means the players need clear leadership and it's vital everyone understands who is giving that guidance.

"With that in mind, I'm delighted that Rob will be in charge. This continuity is vital as we prepare for the new season."

McDermott stepped down at the end of the season and has rejoined Leeds as number two to Brian McClennan.
