England are moving in the right direction after their 60-6 victory over France last week, Stevo told Boots 'n' All.

""It is looking good for the future but McNamara won't let them get carried away.""
Stevo Quotes of the week

Four tries from Sam Tomkins as well as a touch down on his debut from the impressive Gareth Widdop set the hosts on course for a comfortable victory at the Leigh Sports Village.

France's cause wasn't helped by the absence of a number of key players through injury, but Stevo was still impressed by England's play, in their first game under the rule of Steve McNamara.

"You have got to take into account the fact the French outfit were riddled with injuries, were playing with two inexperienced half backs and so you would expect England to steam roll them," Stevo said.

"They did that, but some of the stuff England provided was extremely good. I thought the support play was outstanding and that's always good for the future.

"However, in the second half I think they were a little bit too adventurous; there are times when you have to just slow the game down."

Wonderful Widdop

Widdop enjoyed a fine debut, scoring a try and kicking two goals, and the Melbourne Storm star caught Stevo's eye.

"He is well balanced and he has got pace, which is something we haven't had at full back for some time," he said.

"Watching his combination with linking to the three-quarter line, you would think that he had been playing for England 10 or 15 times, rather than making his debut.

"His combination with Sam Tomkins was very, very good and Tomkins ended up scoring a tremendous try."

Bring on the best
Stevo believes McNamara now has the tools at his disposal to mount a serious challenge against the southern hemisphere powers of Australia and New Zealand.

"I said before the kick off that looking through our line up we have got no problems with forwards.

"I think we can match Australia and New Zealand up front, but our biggest problem in the past has been, do we have the players that can break down the Kiwis' and the Aussies' tight defence? Well, yes I think we have now.

"It is looking good for the future but they won't get carried away, McNamara won't let them get carried away."
