Despite climbing into the world's top-20 for the first time, Edoardo Molinari has admitted he still has plenty of work to do if he is to secure a Ryder Cup debut in October.

The Italian continued his hugely consistent form this season at the Scandinavian Masters over the weekend as he finished in third, just two shots behind eventual champion Richard Johnson.

That result lifted the former US Amateur winner up to 17th in the world rankings but, like Paul Casey, Justin Rose and Padraig Harrington, he still has to make it into one of the nine automatic qualifying positions for October's match at Celtic Manor against America.

Molinari - whose younger brother Francesco lies seventh in the current standings - admitted he could have collected his second European Tour win of the year in Stockholm but for a cold putter.

"I think I could have won easily to be honest - I missed so many putts," he explained.

"But that's golf sometimes. I'm still outside the team, so I need to play very well in the last two or three events."

But while desperate for points to bolster his chances of securing automatic qualification for Colin Montgomerie's side, Molinari will not be playing in this week's Irish Open in Killarney.

Instead he has taken time off to practice for the forthcoming World Golf Championship event in Akron and then the USPGA Championship in Wisconsin that follows.

The 29-year-old from Turin has also now decided to enter the race-ending Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles on August 26-29.
