Lee Westwood has climbed back up to number four in the world, a position he last occupied some eight years ago.

The Englishman is also now Europe's top-ranked player having edged past Paul Casey on the back of his eighth-placed finish in the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai.

Casey slips down to fifth in the world after being forced to pull out of the tournament in China on the final day with a recurrence of his rib muscle injury.

The 32-year-old has returned to America to see a specialist and pulled out of this week's Hong Kong Open, while he is a serious doubt to feature in next week's Dubai World Championship.

The injury could not have come at a worse time for Casey who has seen his chances of winning the inaugural Race to Dubai seriously undermined.

Meanwhile, Ian Poulter has climbed two places to a career-high of 13th in the world despite finishing just 45th in China.

But the news was not so good for Ross Fisher who falls two places to 19th despite tying for 28th - that being because Ernie Els and Rory McIlroy were second and fourth respectively and, as a result, climb to 16th and 17th.

McIlroy has also edged into second place in the Race to Dubai standings, moving past Martin Kaymer and is now just £47,000 behind leader Lee Westwood.
