Carl Pettersson fired a tournament record ten-under-par round of 60 to put himself back into contention heading into the final day of the Canadian Open in Ontario.

The Swede's magnificent round included two eagles, seven birdies and a bogey with the 32-year-old narrowly missing out on a magical 59 after seeing his 30 foot birdie putt from the fringe on the 18th just graze the left lip of the cup.

However, his efforts ensured he will start the final round just four strokes behind overnight leader Dean Wilson who produced his third consecutive round of 65 to move clear at the top of the leaderboard at 15-under-par.

Pettersson sits in a share of second with American Bob Estes (66) and South African Tim Clark (69).

Another South African, Trevor Immelman, is tied for fifth on ten-under alongside US trio Bryce Molder, Kevin Sutherland and Brock Mackenzie.

But it was Pettersson who shone brightest at St George's Golf & Country Club on Sunday and the Swede spoke of his delight at his turnaround following opening rounds of 71 and 68.

"I thought I was going to miss the cut yesterday," Pettersson said after his round.

Canadian beers

"We got finished with the round and it was right on the borderline. Me and Jay Williamson were actually watching the computer to see if we were going to make the cut, and had a few Canadian beers in there.

"That settled me down, I think. Maybe that's what did it."

Pettersson broke the previous Canadian Open record of 62 held jointly by six players, among them Brent Delahoussaye, who achieved the feat on Thursday, and Sutherland, who posted the total on Friday.

However, Pettersson admitted a touch of disappointment after seeing his putt at the last lip out, adding: "Obviously I'm happy with the round, but I would have loved to have seen that putt go in."

Leader Wilson maintained his serene progress as he produced seven birdies and two bogeys to take firm control of the tournament.

His run of three birdies in a row on holes nine, 10 and 11 saw him shake off the attentions of Clark, who had matched him over the first eight holes.

Clark's round failed to spark over the back nine, however, and he ended the day with a 69 - three birdies and two bogeys - to fall off the pace.

England's Luke Donald is in a group of nine players at eight-under-par, some seven shots off the leader.
