Former world champions Ken Doherty and Graeme Dott are through to the first round of the Shanghai Masters after successfully coming through the wildcard stage.

Dubliner Doherty and Lanarkshire cueman Dott have both drifted out of the world's elite top 16 and were therefore forced to go through the extra round of qualification.

But both players rose to the challenge with Doherty, who turns 40 later this month, overcoming India's Aditya Mehta 5-0 and Dott beating United Arab Emirates player Mohammed Shehab 5-3.

With a semi-final appearance in the first Pro Challenge Series event followed by winning the second prior to flying out to Shanghai, Doherty is in good shape as he proved with breaks of 63 and 129 en route to victory.

He will now face Australian Neil Robertson in the first round, while Dott, made breaks of 60, 102 and 64 to set up a meeting with world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan.

Bond through

There was no such luck for Widnes player Andrew Higginson, however, who went down 5-1 to Tian Pengfei.

Scot Marcus Campbell did get through thanks to a 5-1 win over Tang Jun, though, meaning the former will play his compatriot Stephen Hendry and Tian will take on world No.5 Ali Carter.

Elsewhere, Chinese star Liang Wenbo won his first round match, the world number 27 setting up a last 32 date with Peter Ebdon after overcoming the challenge of Tamworth's David Gilbert 5-2.

Matthew Selt and Nigel Bond booked their places in the first round proper, the former seeing off Shi Hanqing 5-0 while Bond edged out China's Yu Delu, 5-4.

The remaining result saw Kent's Gerard Greene lead 3-0 and 4-2 against Li Yan before crashing out.
