Australia's Neil Robertson eased his way into the second round of the Sanyuan Foods China Open with a 5-2 victory over Mike Dunn.
The 'Thunder from Down Under' compiled breaks of 112, 88 and 102 in consecutive frames to motor 4-1 ahead before progressing.
Robertson, the 2009 World Championship semi-finalist, will now face either defending champion Peter Ebdon or Judd Trump for a place in the quarter-finals.
Mark Williams joined the Melbourne potter in the last 16 after the Welshman battled past England's Jamie Cope 5-3.
The two-time former world champion trailed 1-0 and 3-2, but breaks of 68 and 67 in frames six and seven saw Williams wrestle back the initiative before closing out the match.
The Welsh left-hander will play John Higgins after the world champion edged past Fergal O'Brien 5-3.
Having produced 74 and 50 to go 3-1 up, O'Brien clawed one back and made a fight of it until Higgins finally settled matters with a 74 in the eighth frame.
"I'm very happy to win but there were lots if mistakes from the two of us," Higgins told worldsnooker.com.
"If I play like that against Mark I'll lose. The last time I played him here was in the final four years ago and I lost 10-9, so I owe him revenge.
"There's always pressure on your first round game so hopefully I'll have more confidence in my next match."
Home favourite Ding Junhui booked his place in the last 16 with a 5-2 victory over Gerard Greene, wrapping up victory with an impressive 107 break in the seventh frame.
The 22-year-old will face Mark Selby or Rod Lawler in the next round.
Stephen Maguire and Marco Fu also progressed, the Scot beating Barry Hawkins 5-3 and Fu seeing off little-known Belgian Bjorn Haneveer 5-2.
Maguire made breaks of 88 and 73 to take a 4-1 lead against Hawkins, whose comeback, which brought him back to 4-3 behind, fell short.
Fu never looked in trouble against Haneveer, a run of 110 giving him a 3-0 lead and a 95 break putting him 4-1 up.
Maguire will play Mark Allen after he beat Graeme Dott 5-1, while Fu will face Shaun Murphy or Nigel Bond.
