Mark Selby cruised into the second round of the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship after completing a 10-4 victory over Ken Doherty.

Doherty, a former world champion at the Crucible, was in the draw after failing to qualify for the tournament 12 months ago.

But the Irishman was given little time to savour the event as Selby did not look back after opening up a 6-3 lead in the opening session.

When play resumed on Sunday, Doherty won just one further frame as Selby showed why he is considered a contender to lift the title in Sheffield.

Advantage

The 26-year-old, who won the Masters title at Wembley in January, took the first frame of the day thanks to a couple of solid visits to the table.

A break of 82 increased Selby's advantage to five frames before Doherty pegged him back with his first frame of the day.

The Dubliner looked to be mounting a mini-comeback as he built a promising break in the 13th frame but was clinically punished by Selby after missing a black from the spot.

The 2007 runner-up was then on course for a 147 maximum break as he rounded out victory in the next frame.

But his miss on the 11th black robbed him of a possible £157,000 jackpot, although he had already safely booked a date with Stephen Hendry, who edged out Zhang Anda later in the evening.
