Lakeside Hammers are sweating over the fitness of number one Andreas Jonsson.

The Swedish GP star has begun the season in fine fashion for the Essex-based side but he fell heavily during their Sky Sports Elite League opener at Belle Vue on Monday.

Jonsson crashed after completing just two rides - something which played no small part in Lakeside's loss, the Hammers eventually being edged out 47-43.

Bad head

"I'm feeling really bruised and have a headache. This hit must have been very hard as it cracked my new helmet, which was taken by the ref later, in accordance with the regulations," Jonsson revealed on his official website.

"I destroyed my bike a bit too but that's not most important. My both hands are aching but I can't say anything more cause I'm not a doctor. I was examined at the stadium but will do the x-ray and other examinations in Sweden.

"I think it's not that bad as I can move both hands. My right wrist is aching but I can move it so I hope it's just bruised, not broken. I had an operation on this wrist some time ago so maybe that's why."

Jonsson took down team-mate Leigh Lanham in the same crash and although he was not as badly hurt, he still sustained bruising and grazing to his shoulders and knees and is also an injury doubt.

Busy

The Hammers have a busy schedule coming up with their final Craven Shield match against Peterborough on Thursday, followed 24 hours later by their opening home Elite League match with Swindon Robins.

Jonsson is then due to partner Adam Shields at the Elite League best pairs on Saturday.
