Nicholls: Working wonders (Picture credit Les Aubrey)
Eastbourne scored a 53-39 victory against Lakeside in the Sky Sports Elite League on Monday evening, with the combination of Scott Nicholls and Lewis Bridger working wonders for the home side at Arlington Stadium.
They made the best possible start when Nicholls led home Bridger in a 5-1 finish. The Hammers responded when Ricky Kling led a 4-2 in heat two.
With Cameron Woodward and Lubos Tomicek colliding at the start of heat three it came as little surprise when both men subsequently trailed home - Lee Richardson taking the win for Eastbourne.
Edward Kennett's victory in the fourth meant that Eastbourne continued to lead by four points - the status quo retained after Richardson took heat five.
Another Nicholls-Bridger 5-1 - the latter this time coming home first - then saw Eastbourne extend their lead to ten points. Wildcard Kennett took heat six but double points for Lakeside saw them narrow the deficit by two.
The gap was still eight points after Joonas Kilmakorpi took heat eight but a third 5-1 for Eastbourne - Nicholls leading Bridger - left them 12 points in front with five heats remaining.
Kennett beat Andreas Jonsson to win heat 12 and, with Richardson leading a 3-3 for Eastbourne, they led by eight points with three heats remaining.
Nicholls then took the 13th to guarantee victory for Eastbourne with the 14th bringing a nasty collision between Woodward and Kilmakorpi - the latter departing in an ambulance with a dislocated shoulder.
Meanwhile, Poole returned to the top of the table with a stunning victory 46-44 victory at Wolves.
The Pirates clinched victory in spectacular fashion with a maximum 5-1 success in heat 15.
Wolves, with fit-again Niels Kristian Iversen back in their line-up, looked on course for victory.
But Iversen fell in final heat and Bjarne Pedersen and Chris Holder overcame David Howe to take the win.
See what has got the Sky Sports experts' tongues wagging over a busy seven days in sport.
