Jason Crump began the build-up towards Saturday's British Grand Prix at Cardiff with a fourth successive home maximum as Belle Vue thumped Ipswich 51-38 in Monday's Elite League action.

The teams were level at the break on 21 points but the Witches fell away badly in the second half of the meeting as Charlie Gjedde (15+1) and Billy Forsberg (11) turned on the style for the home fans.

Jarek Hampel recorded two early wins while Robert Miskowiak was also on the mark for Ipswich but the Polish duo struggled with the conditions thereafter.

It all started going wrong for the Witches in Heat 8 when Chris Schramm looked unfortunate to be excluded after Jonas Raun locked up in front of him, causing him to fall and bring down the trailing Jason Lyons.

In the re-run, Tobias Kroner then suffered an engine failure on the first lap to hand the hosts a 5-0, which was swiftly followed by a 5-1 when Gjedde and Forsberg shut out Steve Johnston and Miskowiak.

There was no way back for the visitors with Crump and Gjedde looking so fast, while young Swede Forsberg impressed once again with some fast starts.

Gjedde left the best until last, passing both Johnston (9) and Hampel in one manouevre to chase home the impeccable Crump and round-off a big night for the Aces.

In the night's other league action Swindon claimed a hard fought victory at Peterborough to move into top spot.

Pulled clear

Although the teams were neck-and-neck throughout the Robins were never behind in the meeting and pulled clear at the end to win 48-42.

Leigh Adams once again weighed in heavily for the visitors with 13 points but it was Mads Korneliussen (14+1) and James Wright (10+1) who were the stars, pairing up in Heat 12 for a vital maximum.

It gave Swindon a six point cushion and with Adams and Travis McGowan winning the next two heats there was no way back for the Panthers, for whom Hans Andersen top scored with 14 points.

In the Elite League Knockout Cup Eastbourne lost 52-40 at Wolverhampton but were never likely to relinquish their 32 point advantage from the first leg.

Wolves scored heavily throughout the team with Niels-Kristian Iversen scoring 15 from six rides, but Scott Nicholls scored 12 for the Eagles to steady the ship and ensure their safe passage into the semi-finals.
