Pedersen: Four heat wins in a losing cause
Coventry continued their late push for the Elite League play-offs with a 48-42 victory over troubled Peterborough on Monday night.
The Bees followed up their derby success over Wolverhampton last time out with a home win against a Panthers line-up still without Hans Andersen.
Bjarne Pedersen proved an excellent stand-in, managing four heat wins including holding off Chris Harris in a thrilling final heat of the meeting.
However, his efforts were in a losing cause as Peterborough were never able to forge ahead against another team stuck at the wrong end of the table.
Simon Stead (12+2) recorded two early heat wins for the hosts but they missed the chance to open up a sizeable gap in heat six when Oliver Allen slipped off his bike when comfortably second behind his Harris, though he made amends soon after.
Heat eight proved to be decisive in the final outcome, as Allen led home a 1-2 finish for the Bees that crucially pushed them six points clear.
Peterborough did their best to close the gap with Pedersen doing his bit, though the fact that they were not too far behind meant they never got the chance to use a tactical ride.
Ben Barker and Billy Janniro, back in action after the second round of the American championships, recorded a 3-3 result in heat 14 that meant the Bees had an unassailable lead with one race still to go.
Coventry remain stuck down in seventh spot in the standings but with meetings in hand still have slim hopes of retaining their title.
"You have to look and say that the play-offs are a hard, hard task for anyone outside the top six," Bees manager Peter Oakes told Sky Sports.
"But you never know, if another team gets on a roll and starts winning away you can easily catch up with three points for an away win."
See what has got the Sky Sports experts' tongues wagging over a busy seven days in sport.
