Lakeside's failure to win at Peterborough has guaranteed Poole Pirates top-spot in the Sky Sports Elite League.
The Hammers and Pirates had already sealed the top-two positions, giving them the home draw in the play-offs, but the Essex side had still hoped to finish the regular season in top-spot.
And they were fancied to get something at the East of England Showground, but they came up short as Peterborough surprisingly eased to a comfortable 56-37 win.
Stand-in captain Daniel King was top man for The Panthers with 12 plus one, but there was also a tremendous showing from reserve Claus Vissing with 10 paid 14.
Kenneth Bjerre (11) and Premier League guest Tai Woffinden (10) also hit double figures.
Lakeside just did not fire with number one Andreas Jonsson top-scoring with 13 which included a tactical win, indeed there was little else to back up the Swede with the exception of Lewis Bridger who claimed 10.
New Polish signing Tomasz Jedrzejak could not produce the heroics of his debut as he claimed just four points.
The win keeps Peterborough out of the bottom two after second-from-bottom Coventry Bees secured a 53-40 success over basement club Wolverhampton.
The Bees were easily too strong for Wolves with Chris Harris (12), Ryan Fisher (11+2) and Billy Janniro (10+1) all claiming double figures - indeed they could even cope with Hans Andersen scoring just seven.
Again Wolves had top two Freddie Lindgren (14) and Niels Kristian Iversen (13+1) in good form - but little else in support.
Wolves are now confirmed in the bottom two and they will have to wait to see who they face in the inaugural relegation play-off - and it could very well be Coventry.
See what has got the Sky Sports experts' tongues wagging over a busy seven days in sport.
