Lakeside suffered a shock 47-43 home defeat to Coventry in the first-leg of the Craven Shield final.

The Hammers, who lost the Elite League Grand Final to Poole earlier this week, were firm favourites to take the Shield - but they now have a mountain to climb.

The Hammers had Andreas Jonsson back at number one and he did his job with 15+1, whilst recent signing Tomasz Jedrzejak showed up well with 12.

Leigh Lanham grabbed paid nine - but nobody else could produce a heat win for the home side.

Coventry had Hans Andersen in good form with 13 - but the star of the evening was The Bees' young reserve Ben Barker, who grabbed a brilliant 14.

Indeed The Bees were far from their best themselves with Chris Harris (9), Billy Janniro (3) and Simon Stead (4+1) all under-achieving, whilst Olly Allen crashed out early on - but still Coventry did enough to claim the advantage.

The second-leg comes at Brandon on next Friday, 24th October.
