A bid has been launched to try and introduce speedway to Ireland.

The emerald isle has not hosted speedway since the 1970s but promoter Stuart Cosgrove is looking to build at least one track with a view to bringing a Grand Prix to Ireland.

A number of speedway riders are due to be in attendance at this weekend's Irish Motorcycle Show - promoted by Ruth Lemass and John Gunning - and the likes of Ben Barker, Daniel King and Stuart Robson will ride in demonstration events at the Royal Dublin Showgrounds - which has been mooted as a possible future venue for the sport.

"The new circuit would wish to hold challenge matches at National League level and form the basis of a bid to bring a Grand Prix to Ireland," said Cosgrove, who is also looking at a site near Limerick.

Cosgrove has already appointed a track builder in the shape of Glyn Taylor, who has recently built new circuits at Somerset and Redcar.
