Nicholls: Top-scored for GB
Great Britain booked their place in the Speedway World Cup final after taking victory in the second qualifier at King's Lynn.
The winners of the two qualifying events progress straight to the final in Vojens on Saturday and Britain now join Poland in making it through after winning in a thrilling meeting live on Sky Sports.
GB lined up against Sweden, Finland and the highly-fancied Australia at the Norfolk Arena, but Rob Lyon's side were in brilliant form and led by skipper Chris Harris - they roared their way to victory on 51 points.
Australia, as expected, provided the main opposition for Britain and they won the opening two heats before Simon Stead and Harris won back-to-back races for the home nation,
Sweden were struggling from the off and played their joker as early as heat nine with Freddie Lindgren managing to win and take double points.
An enthralling meeting then saw both Britain and Australia fail to score in heat 10 as firstly Tai Woffinden and then Rory Schlein smashed into the air fence in separate accidents.
Further consecutive wins in heats 12 and 13 from Harris and Scott Nicholls meant Britain were firmly in contention as the meeting became a two-horse race with Australia.
Britain levelled matters in heat 17 through Nicholls before a second place from Lee Richardson in heat 18 saw GB go ahead and they were never behind again.
Huge drama was to come with just three races left, Stead was excluded as he went down after a tough first corner from Chris Holder - much to the annoyance of GB boss Rob Lyon. However, the Cardiff GP winner could not win the re-run, which would have given Australia the lead as Jonas Davidsson took the win for Sweden.
The penultimate heat 24 saw both captains take to the tapes, and Harris got the better of Australia's Davey Watt and indeed he could only manage third, meaning GB had a two-point lead going into the final heat.
But in the end that lead was not needed as Nicholls, Britain's top-scorer, came out and won the final heat in fine style to book the home nation's place at Vojens.
Australia in the end finished second with 48 points, ahead of Sweden on 40 whilst Finland came in well behind on 14.
Australia and Sweden now travel to Vojens on Thursday for the race-off for the final two-spots against hosts Denmark and Russia.
See what has got the Sky Sports experts' tongues wagging over a busy seven days in sport.
