Denmark and Sweden have joined defending champions Poland and Great Britain in this weekend's Speedway World Cup final after claiming the top two places in Thursday's race-off.

The Danish team took the spoils after Kenneth Bjerre finished second ahead of Sweden's Andreas Jonsson in the last of the evening's 25 heats in Vojens. Denmark finished with 48 points to Sweden's 47, with Australia and Russia scoring 36 and 19 points respectively.

British Grand Prix winner Chris Holder won the final heat for Australia but by that stage he and team-mates Darcy Ward, Davey Watt, Rory Schlein and Troy Batchelor were already out of contention.

Only Ward and Schlein had managed to win during the first 15 heats, leaving them trailing behind the Scandinavians and left with no option other than to play their joker.

Gamble

However, with double points up for grabs, the gamble instead backfired spectacularly when Holder trailed home fourth and last. Schlein scored another win in heat 18 but the Australians were out of it four races later.

After winning four of the first five heats, Sweden always seemed assured of progressing and riders Jonsson, Fredrik Lindgen, Magnus Zetterstrom, Antonio Lindback and Jonas Davidsson all took wins during the evening.

In contrast, Denmark failed to win until Hans Andersen took heat seven. But with Niels-Kristian Iversen, Andersen again and Nicolai Klindt all winning they edged in front of Sweden by heat 15 - the battle between the two nevertheless going all the way.

Saturday's final will also be held in Vojens. Live coverage starts on Sky Sports 4/HD4 at 6pm.
