Kevin Painter produced the performance of the lifetime as he knocked champion Raymond van Barneveld out of the PDC World Championships.

Painter was simply too hot for van Barneveld to handle - with the Artist wrapping the match up in style, a 10-darter clinching a 4-2 victory.

Barney, who had been suffering with illness over the Christmas period, had taken the first set - but nine 180s and some clinical finishing saw the Painter come out on top.

Painter had hit an 11-dart in the third set, while seven treble 20s in a row set him on his way to his grandstand finale.

Van Barneveld had led 2-0 in the sixth set, but he was left stunned as Painter stole the show.

And Painter was understandably thrilled to have booked his place in the last eight at the expense of the champion.

He told Sky Sports 1: "I am absolutely delighted. The nine-darter would have been nice but just the winning double does it for me.

"It is a great feeling. If you had asked me 18 months ago I would have said this would have been a miracle.

Delighted

"But I have been playing well for the last year, so I am not surprised. I am delighted as I have played some good darts but I am not surprised. Some people might be, but I am not.

"Raymond has been a great champion and is a fantastic bloke, but sometimes it is just someone else's day."

Peter Manley set up a quarter-final showdown with qualifier Kirk Shepherd after ruthlessly dismantling Jan van der Rassel 4-1.

The Carlisle thrower produced some of his best darts of the tournament, with his accuracy at the doubles the difference.

Van der Vassel had taken the first set, but that was as good as it got for the Dutchman - who was guilty of missing chances to level at 2-2 and then to save the match in the fifth set.

That meant Manley will take on the giantkilling Shepherd in the last eight - with the Kent ace adding the scalp of Barrie Bates earlier in the day to the wins over Terry Jenkins and Mark McGowan.

However Manley immediately turned up the heat on the 21-year-old by insisting he cannot afford to miss a single double when they meet.

Manley told Sky Sports 1: "It is fantastic. All credit to the young man. It is not his fault that the other players haven't turned up.

"He has turned up and won. But he can't beat me missing all those doubles.

"I won't miss. I don't miss. He is going to be playing a guy who will hit the doubles. He will need to outscore me as it is the only chance he has to beat me."

John Part will face James Wade in the quarter-finals having totally blown away Alex Roy.

Watford-based Roy was simply no match for the two-time former champion, who romped to a 4-0 victory.
