Jenkins: Back in form
Phil Taylor crashed to his second Premier League defeat in three weeks as Terry Jenkins won 8-5 in front of a crowd of 5,000 at the MEN Arena in Manchester.
It was sweet revenge for the 'Bull' from Herefordshire, who was beaten by 'The Power' in last season's final and came into the contest bottom of the table without a win.
It was just Taylor's second ever defeat in 47 Premier League matches but he was well beaten despite a couple of wobbles from his fellow 47-year-old.
Jenkins raced into a 3-0 lead with legs of 14 and 12 darts and then a 116 finish.
Taylor pulled a leg back and after Jenkins missed six darts at a double in the fifth, the 13-time world champion levelled the contest at 3-3.
Jenkins won the next and then capitalised on Taylor missing a dart at double top to go 5-3 ahead.
He continued to take out the doubles as Taylor struggled, hitting tops with his first dart and then with his second to go 7-3 up and within a leg of victory.
He then had seven darts towards a nine-darter and looked set to wrap up a comfortable win only to stutter once again.
He missed five darts at a double to lose the leg and Taylor won the next for 7-5.
After Jenkins missed two more match points Taylor had a chance to get to within a leg, but he just missed a bullseye attempt and Jenkins hit double three to clinch the match.
Jenkins told Sky Sports: "I got off to a brilliant start this time which is what I didn't do in the first two games. Then I started to waiver when I am usually good in the second half. I thought 'just don't throw it away'.
"I just wanted a good televised win. I have been through two or three months where I haven't struck form but I have been coming back into form the last two or three weeks.
"I knew I was ready for this. It is just a bit gutting that I wasn't the first person to beat him. I really felt good."
There was to be no repeat upset in the evening's second match as Raymond Van Barneveld took advantage of some uncharacteristically poor finishing from Peter Manley.
The Dutchman maintained his 100 per cent winning record with his third straight 8-4 win to top the standings after three rounds.
Barneveld told Sky Sports: "I am relaxed, that's the main thing. I feel comfortable. If you can play on this stage every single week it's fantastic. And I'm hitting my doubles."
Three-time and current reigning world champion John Part silenced Wayne Mardle's army of fans by battling back from 5-2 down to win 8-6.
The Canadian won five legs on the spin but missed three match points at 7-5, before closing out the match in the final leg with his first shot at double top. It was Part's first win of the tournament.
In the evening's final match, James Wade battled back from 7-5 down to secure a 7-7 draw with Adrian Lewis.
'Jackpot' Lewis will feel he should have inflicted Wade's first Premier League defeat but Wade hit two successive double tops with his first attempts in the last two legs and goes second in the table.
