Manley: Wade victory

I'm just trying to beat my opponent as fast as possible because Mervyn showed how good he can be if you give him a chance.

Peter Manley ended James Wade's run at the European Championship with a thrilling 11-9 second round win, while Phil Taylor moved through in ominous form.

'One Dart' Manley powered into a 7-2 lead with seven legs on the spin against the world number three only for the left-hander to hit back and level at 7-7.

The game went all the way and so extra legs were needed to decide the winner, and it was the man from Carlisle who took the crucial leg to go through 11-9.

"I should have finished James off sooner but he showed why he's world number three by coming back," said Manley.

"I was worried when he got back level but I got my doubles back when it mattered."

Power packed

Phil Taylor recorded a spell binding average of 113 in beating Mervyn King 9-3 and prove why he is the big favourite for the title.

King tried to stick with the 13-time world champion as he too averaged over 100 and took out superb shots of 141 and 121 but ti was never enough against the consistent brilliance of 'The Power'.

"I didn't realise the average was that high but I'm obviously delighted to have played so well," said Taylor.

"I'm just trying to beat my opponent as fast as possible because Mervyn showed how good he can be if you give him a chance.

"He's a real fighter and never gives in."

Dennis down

Raymond van Barneveld had too much for veteran Dennis Priestley but the Yorkshire did wow the crowd with superb checkouts of 145 and 117 during his 9-4 defeat.

Alan Tabern produced a fine comeback to beat former BDO world champion Jelle Klaasen 9-6 in their exciting second round match.

Klaasen was in great form as he opened up leads of 4-1 and 6-2, but left-handed Tabern hit back with a 12-darter against the throw with a 126 finish on the bull.

That got him started and the St Helens thrower went on to take seven legs on the spin to reach the next round.

Ronnie Baxter knocked out surprise package Carlos Rodriguez, seeing off Terry Jenkins' conqueror 9-5 to reach his first major quarter-final of the year.

Blackpool's Baxter was always in charge when leading 5-1 and 8-2 and the Spaniard could not find the same form that got his beyond the Bull in the shock of the first round.

Mark Walsh was a good 9-6 winner against Wayne Mardle, Adrian Lewis was far from his best but scrambled well to beat Denis Ovens 9-5, while Robert Thornton beat Mensur Suljovic 9-7.
