Phil Taylor opened the defence of his Grand Slam of Darts title with a whitewash of poor Phill Nixon in Wolverhampton.

The Power crushed the former BDO World Championship runner-up 5-0 on the opening afternoon of the tournament, which starts off with a round robin stage.

Averaging 107.36 and needing no more than 15 darts in every leg, Taylor turned in a dominating performance to show he is in no mood to let his crown slip.

The 48-year-old from Stoke managed an impressive 113 checkout in the fifth to seal a straightforward victory.

Shock

There was a shock loss for reigning BDO world champion Mark Webster, who went down 5-4 to wildcard qualifier Colin McCarry.

The Irishman raced out to an early 3-0 lead before holding off a fightback from his opponent to seal a memorable win.

There were no such problems for another world champion, John Part. The Canadian overcame the odd tough moment to beat women's world champion Anastasia Dobromyslova 5-1.

Afterwards Part had words of encouragement for his beaten opponent, insisting her hopes of making it through to the knockout stages were not over.

"I lost my first game last year and still won the group so Anastasia has still got a chance," he said.

Dobromyslova had chances to make an early impression in her first match but failed to hit doubles in the opening two legs.

Painful loss

While Part was victorious the news was not so good for another Canadian, Gary Mawson, who was troubled by a broken toe suffered after his Harley Davidson motorbike fell on his foot recently.

He hobbled around on stage before eventually being put out of his misery by Robert Thornton, a 5-3 result making it the perfect start for the Scot.

Andy Hamilton, who was runner-up to Taylor in the event last year, opened his campaign with a 5-3 win against Brian Woods.

Darryl Fitton began life in Group H with a 5-2 victory over Kevin Painter while Denis Ovens defeated PDC rival Adrian Lewis by the same scoreline.
