Andy Jenkins produced a superb display to claim a shock 5-4 win over Phil Taylor at the PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts which leaves the defending champion now facing a winner-takes-all battle with Vincent van der Voort.
Jenkins' victory, the first over Taylor of his career, ensures he qualifies for the second round and he is joined there by Mervyn King and John Part who also recorded wins on Sunday night.
Raymond van Barneveld, James Wade, Andy Hamilton and Darryl Fitton also moved to the brink of qualification as they all registered their second straight victories.
However, it was Jenkins who stole the headlines as he put in a memorable display to stun 13-time world champion Taylor.
The Portsmouth marksman made a fast start to lead 2-0 and 3-2, but looked set for defeat as Taylor battled back to put himself 4-3 up.
However, Jenkins was not to be denied and having taken leg eight on double 16 put in a tremendous 12-darter to take the decider against the darts - clinching victory with a 104 check-out.
A delighted Jenkins said afterwards: "I'm so proud to have beaten Phil, he's the best player ever and it means a lot to me."
King secured his place in the second round with a solid 5-3 win over Colin McGarry while Part thrashed Kevin McDine 5-1 to advance.
Women's world champion Anastasia Dobromyslova almost came up with shock to topple that of Jenkins' as she came within a whisker of becoming the first female to win a televised darts match against Wayne Mardle.
Mardle appeared to have matters in hand as he raced out to a 4-0 lead, but his Russian opponent took the next two after the interval and then forced the contest into a decider with check-outs of 116 and 120 much to the delight of the crowd.
But Mardle held his nerve to seal a 5-4 win that keeps his hopes alive, although the Essex thrower now has to beat John Part and hope that McDine loses to Dobromyslova in his next match to qualify.
Van Barneveld battled back from 3-1 down to beat Robert Thornton 5-3 and Wade did likewise against Dennis Ovens to put themselves in strong positions, Wade finishing with a stunning three-dart average of 111.
Fitton overcame Paul Nicholson 5-2 and Hamilton thrashed Alan Tabern 5-1, while Terry Jenkins and Adrian Lewis got their campaigns back on track after opening defeats with wins over Colin Lloyd (5-3) and Niels de Ruiter (5-0) respectively.
Elsewhere, there were 5-0 whitewash victories for Simon Whitlock, Gary Mawson and Mark Webster, with van der Voort, Gary Anderson and Wes Newton also successful.
