Steve Beaton sent Adrian Lewis tumbling out of the European Championship in the first round.

Beaton averaged 94.17 to see off a below-par Lewis 6-2 on Friday evening at the Claus Event Centre in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands.

Raymond van Barneveld and Mervyn King both survived final-leg deciders to make it through to the second round.

Van Barneveld wasted leads of 4-2 and 5-3 before edging out Dennis Priestley, who missed three match darts in the final leg.

"Story of my life," said the Dutchman. "But I made it through to the second round and that's what counts really."

King, the world number six, was taken all the way by Spain's Carlos Rodriguez but came through in the crunch.

Mark Walsh, meanwhile, recovered from 4-1 down to beat Kevin Painter with a run of five successive legs.

Wade victory

James Wade fended off a spirited recovery from Alan Tabern to claim a 6-4 win.

Wade opened a 5-1 lead before being pegged back as Tabern secured three legs on the bounce.

But the Aldershot left-hander recovered just in time to close out the win in the 10th leg.

"I got out of trouble out there really and I'll have to step up a gear now," said Wade.

Elsewhere, Andy Hamilton was a 6-3 winner against Remco van Eijden, Michael van Gerwen thrashed Vincent van der Voort 6-2 and Colin Osborne beat Paul Nicholson 6-2.
