Taylor: Into last eight
Phil Taylor produced his second brilliant display of the day to defeat Simon Whitlock 9-6 and progress to the quarter-finals of the UK Open.
'The Power' had whitewashed Kevin Painter on Saturday afternoon and carried his form into his evening contest, although he was made to work by the tough Australian.
Another thrashing seemed on the cards early in the contest as Taylor raced out to a four-leg lead before Whitlock won twice against the throw to reduce the gap to one.
The 15-time world champion hit back and pulled out a cushion but the pressure seemed to be mounting as he missed a simple double and Whitlock capitalised to make it 7-6.
However, Taylor would not let his opponent back in again and reeled off the last two legs, including a 106 checkout in the 15th leg, to finish with an average of 105.
Taylor said he had to constantly be on top of his game in a rematch of this year's world championship final.
"He made me think all the time," he told Sky Sports after the match.
"Every time I was on a finish, whatever it was, you had to go for it. You couldn't just leave the double in and relax. He just doesn't let you relax at all."
Mervyn King landed a perfect nine-dart finish but was still sent crashing out after a nail-biting 9-8 defeat to Gary Anderson.
Not much separated the two players throughout the contest, but King seemed to get the upper hand when he landed double 12 to complete the ultimate finish.
However, Anderson was not fazed and held his nerve in the deciding leg to edge the exciting contest.
Earlier in the evening, Andy Hamilton produced a late surge to topple Ronnie Baxter in their fifth-round contest.
Hamilton was 7-5 down but checked-out 104 in the process of winning four legs in a row to eventually prevail 9-7.
James Wade had little trouble dispatching the challenge of Kevin McDine as the 2009 Premier League winner quickly closed out a 9-2 win.
Adrian Lewis was also an easy victor over Wayne Jones, eventually winning 9-4.
Meanwhile on the second board, Denis Ovens demolished Andy Smith 9-1, Tony Ayres defeated Alan Tabern 9-5 and Wes Newton also booked a place in the last eight after a 9-5 win over Nigel Heydon.
