Wade: Through to quarter-finals
James Wade reached the quarter-finals of the StanJames.com World Matchplay on Wednesday night with a 13-10 victory against Vincent van der Voort.
The world number three, winner of the event three years ago, overcame a slow start against his Dutch opponent, who broke Wade's throw in the very first leg.
Wade edged in front after two successive breaks in the sixth and eighth legs and managed to pull as many as five legs clear as he strove for the 13-leg finishing line.
Van der Voort found his aim again with a break in the 19th leg and although Wade hit back instantly with a 121 check-out, his opponent broke again and then held to pull the deficit back to two.
However, with the score now 12-10 with Wade having the throw, it was a case of too little too late for van der Voort as the Englishman sealed the win by hitting double five for a 40 check-out.
The night's first match brought a surprise as Wayne Jones reached the last eight with a 13-9 victory against world number six Ronnie Baxter.
Jones quickly established a 3-0 lead and despite his opponent's attempts to close the gap, the man from Wolverhampton repeatedly managed to edge clear.
Wade and Jones were joined by Co Stompe, who progressed after beating Mark Webster 13-9.
The Dutchman's progress seemed a formality when he opened up a 10-3 lead but the former BDO world champion then mounted a comeback and broke his opponent's throw three times in a row.
Webster pulled the match back to 11-8 and almost broke again but having narrowly missed a 144 check-out, Stompe hit double 16 to hold.
The Welshman pulled one more leg back but the gap ultimately proved too big for him and Stompe sealed his win by hitting bull for an 87 check-out.
Raymond van Barneveld continued his superb start with a 13-5 victory over Alan Tabern.
Tabern shone early with checkouts of 121 and 156, but the Dutchman averaged almost 104 as he produced a strong display.
"I'm enjoying myself and it's great to be on stage again after two months off," said van Barneveld.
"If I keep playing like this I don't fear anyone."
