Former Crusaders captain Todd Blackadder has been appointed as the team's new boss following Robbie Deans departure to coach Australia.

The Super 14 champions have handed Blackadder, the head coach of the Tasman Air New Zealand Cup side, a three-year deal from 2009.

The 36-year-old captained the Crusaders from 1997 to 2001 and also had five years in Scotland as a player with Edinburgh, whom he coached in the 2004-05 season. He has also been an assistant coach of Scotland.

He will be assisted by former Crusaders and New Zealand team-mates Mark Hammett and Daryl Gibson.

Gibson, who will take charge of the backs, is currently coaching in Scotland, where he has been a player-coach with the Glasgow Warriors.
