Percy Montgomery, South Africa's most-capped player, has announced his retirement from international rugby.

The 34-year-old released a statement straight after the crushing 53-8 win over Australia at Coca-Cola Park to say he was ending his Springboks career.

A member of the World-Cup winning squad of 2007, Montgomery made 102 appearances since his international bow back in 1997.

In that time he has scored 893 points, a South African record. He also set a new landmark for points in a single Test last year when he managed 35 against Namibia.

Carrying on

Montgomery intends to carry on playing at provincial level for Western Province in the Currie Cup and said he would be available to play for the Stormers in the Super 14 competition in 2009.

"Not many players can choose when they can leave Test rugby and that is what makes this so special to me to be able to leave now, after this win," Montgomery said in a statement.

"I have had many memorable moments in a Springbok jersey and it has been a privilege to play for my country and to go around the world playing against so many great players of other countries.

"I will be playing out my career in Western Province and tonight I am thanking Peter (de Villiers), Dick (Muir) and Gary (Gold) for seeing value in my role in their first season as Bok coaches.

"Thank you for believing in me and allowing me an opportunity to earn 100 Test caps."

Truly blessed

SA Rugby manager of national teams Andy Marinos paid tribute to Montgomery, who did not play for his country for two years due to a stint playing club rugby in Wales.

"We are truly blessed to have had a player such as Monty play out his career for us," he said.

"He has produced some special moments over the years and has been a remarkable player and individual who has been a true credit to his country and the Springboks."

Montgomery managed 25 tries and kicked six drop goals whilst playing at either full-back, fly-half or outside centre.
