I couldn't think of anything better [than touring with the Lions]. Time is maybe a little bit short, but I'll enjoy the journey towards that Lions tour.

Jonny Wilkinson has not given up hope of making the British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa in the summer.

The England fly-half has been out since the end of September after dislocating his knee in a Guinness Premiership match for the Newcastle Falcons against Gloucester.

He is set to see a consultant in the coming days and, while the RBS Six Nations opener against Italy on February 7 will come to soon for the 2003 World Cup-winner, he has his sights set on the Lions tour at the end of May.

"I'm recovering pretty fast. I've got a big trip to go and see a specialist for a few weeks and after that I'll probably be back on the field pretty soon," Wilkinson told Sky Sports News.

"Rather than looking at what I need to do to get into the England side I'm looking at what I need to do to be my best.

"I couldn't think of anything better [than touring with the Lions. Time is maybe a little bit short, but I'll enjoy the journey towards that Lions tour.

"If it happens great and if it doesn't I'll get the next one. I will keep going as long as people want me to be around so if not this one then the next one."

The Lions get underway in a warm-up match against Highveld XV on May 30 ahead of a gruelling tour, which includes three Tests against the world champions.
