French international winger Maxime Medard has been diagnosed with swine flu after returning from Australia.

The 22-year-old Toulouse back is suspected to have picked up the illness during his time in Australia where he played in France's test match loss against The Wallabies last weekend.

Medard went to hospital on Thursday on the advice of the France team's doctor, Jean-Philippe Hager, the French Rugby Federation revealed in a statement on Friday.

He subsequently underwent a series of tests which confirmed he had picked up the H1N1 virus, the statement continued.

It also added that all players and staff in the French party are following swine flu surveillance guidelines issued upon their return.

Australia is known to have more than 1,000 confirmed swine flu cases, amongst them some professional rugby players.
