Leeds Carnegie have been boosted by the news that centre Scott Barrow's knee injury in not as bad as first feared.

The former Glasgow player limped off in the 29th minute of Carnegie's narrow defeat to Harlequins in the Guinness Premiership on December 4.

It was initially feared that the 29-year-old could face a lengthy lay off but scans have revealed that Barrow could return against Newcastle Falcons in their next Guinness Premiership match on December 27.

Barrow will miss Carnegie's back-to-back fixtures against Romanian team Bucuresti in the Amlin Challenge Cup.

However director of rugby Andy Key is encouraged by the news that Barrow will return sooner then first anticipated.

He said: "Scott's scan has revealed that it is a grade two injury thankfully and that means that he could be out of action for three or four weeks.

"However, that is certainly better news than we first feared on Friday night."

Scrum-half Andy Gomarsall who also went off injured in the Harlequins defeat is expected to return in a fortnight for the Newcastle match.
