Toulon coach Tana Umaga is set to leave France at the end of the season to return to New Zealand.

Umaga has helped establish Toulon in the Top 14 having acted as coach, player-coach and assistant coach over the past three seasons.

However the former All Blacks international has now agreed to join Counties Manukau Steelers on a two-year deal in a player-assistant coach role.

And Umaga, who will make the switch at the end of the Top 14 season, is relishing the chance to return home.

"My family and I are excited to be returning home and I am looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead," he said.

"I would like to thank Counties Manukau for having faith in my ability and giving me this opportunity.

"I am really looking forward to learning from and working with the coach Milton Haig and the players as well as putting the boots on again. I have kept myself fit and am still training."
