Glasgow forward Johnnie Beattie is facing an injury lay-off of up to six months after being told he needs surgery on his shoulder.

The Scotland international, who impressed during this year's Six Nations, will go under the knife in Edinburgh this week with Warriors team-mate James Eddie also set for an operation on a similar problem.

Beattie has been told he could be out of action for half a year but is holding out hope for a shorter-than-expected spell on the sidelines.

"It's probably too early to say definitively how long I'll be out," Beattie told Glasgow's official website.

Cautious

"Prior to the operation, the surgeon is talking about a six-month window to get back but that's quite cautious and if I regain the strength at the same level as my right shoulder then it should be sooner."

Fellow back row Eddie is also set for an extended spell on the injury list after recently dislocating his shoulder in training.

Warriors head coach Sean Lineen added: "We wish both Johnnie and James a speedy recovery and we're grateful for the expert medical attention they are receiving.

"Currently there are a number of bumps and bruises within the camp. Happily, however, our physiotherapists are confident that the vast majority of players on the treatment bench at the moment will be fit for our first Magners League game against Leinster in September."

Beattie looks certain to miss a large part of Glasgow's Magners League campaign and is also likely to be unavailable for Scotland's autumn Tests with New Zealand, South Africa and Samoa.
