The New Zealand Rugby Union has confirmed that former All Black flanker Jamie Joseph is to take up coaching duties at the Otago Highlanders.

The news comes after the NZRU effectively ended current incumbent Glenn Moore's tenure when they announced that the position would be advertised.

Joseph, who was an Otago provincial stalwart in the 1990s, played 20 Test matches for New Zealand from 1992 to 1995.

The NZRU said on Friday that the 40-year-old would take over the position at Otago at the end of August.

In the meantime he will continue in his coaching role at Wellington in New Zealand's domestic provincial championship, which began on Thursday.

Joseph also coached New Zealand Maori during their successful centenary series in June, recording victories over the New Zealand Barbarians, Ireland and England.

"The Highlanders are an exciting team with a great mix of experience and plenty of new potential," he said.

"This is a great opportunity for me and one I am looking forward to."
