South Africa coach Peter de Villiers is facing a fight to hold on to his job following a disastrous Tri-Nations campaign.

The Springboks had gone into the tournament as defending champions - but they lost all barring one game, finishing bottom of the table.

De Villiers will now face some intense questioning from the South African Rugby Union as part of a full review into their performances.

A SARU statement read: "The annual review of the Springboks' performance in the Vodacom Tri-Nations will be scheduled as per normal with Springbok coach Peter de Villiers for later this month.

"The review will include all aspects of Springbok performance."

SARU president Oregan Hoskins added: "All rugby followers are extremely disappointed with results in the Vodacom Tri-Nations, as are the Springbok team and management, of course.

"We take the situation very seriously but there is a process in place and we will follow that through."

De Villiers' position will not be helped following his comments in support of Bees Roux - the Bulls prop who has been arrested and charged with the killing of policeman Ntshimane Johannes Mogale.

Hoskins admitted that "there would be formal discussions with the coach about some of his reported comments".
