Leicester and England number eight Jordan Crane has been ruled out for up to eight weeks after undergoing ankle surgery.

Tigers head coach Richard Cockerill confirmed the news after his star back-rower suffered the original blow during a pre-season fixture with Munster.

"Jordan has had surgery on some ligament damage in his ankle to clean that up," Cockerill told the Leicester Mercury. "It's a bit worse than we first feared."

Leicester are currently struggling with injuries in their forward pack, with Geoff Parling, Richard Blaze, Louis Deacon and Tom Croft not fit for action.

The defending champions begin their Aviva Premiership campaign away to Northampton on Sunday.
